Appointed August 1982 as Bobby Robson became England manager. Contract ended 1987. Took a coaching job in Kuwait June 1987.

He probably took over the reigns at a most difficult time, Ipswich had been a top team for decade, in consequence the squad which had raised us to this pinnacle were of course on top wages and some would say they were on there way down anyway.

It is always difficult to perceive what is going on behind the scenes, but it seemed that the players did not have the same affinity with Bobby Ferguson as they had with Bobby Robson, Consequently it showed in performances and results and eventually players had to be sold to keep the club solvent – the result relegation.

Summing up it seemed that Bobby Ferguson under the supervision of Bobby Robson was a fine coach, but as a manager he lacked the ability to deal with men and obviously disliked the domestic and administrative duties which a manager should deal with.

We were pleased to here that very soon [after leaving Town] he obtained a lucrative coaching job in Kuwait.

Town's future manager was originally appointed youth team manager in 1971 becoming reserve team coach a year later following the departure of Roy McCrohan. Made the reserve team sheet on at least one occasion as an unused sub.

Promoted to Manager in 1982 following the departure of Robson. First joined the club eleven years earlier as Youth team coach, progressing to Reserve team coach and First team coach (as Robson's right hand man). Resigned at the end of the 86/87 season following Town's failure to gain promotion back to Division One following relegation the preceeding season.
