| Sam has sadly passed away aged 86. Missing from your a-z is the fact that Sam, then a Southend player, was in the Northern Irish squad that reached the 1958 World Cup quarter-finals, although he didn't get a game. He won his one and only full cap in a 3-2 victory against England at Wembley in 1957, scoring one of the goals. Anonymouse 04-05-2011 |

page & wonder why there is no ref to the fact that
Sam held or still holds the record for 33? goals in a season !?,(late 50s),poss matched by Derek
Spence also from N I.ps,he also scored a goal in
every debut for every team he played for, including N I,with the exception of Ipswich?.

| Sam joined Cambridge United July 1960, scoring 14 goals in 74 Southern League fixtures, he then moved to Crusaders as player manager in July 1962 A Ross 06-01-2010 |
| Sam was indeed a brilliant player. As a boy I watched almost every game at Roots Hall and Sam was one of the most skillful ball players ever to set foot there. I recall his call-up for the Ireland team very late in his career, he was somewhere around 33 years of age. The newspapers dubbed him `The Old Man From The Sea` and his comment after scoring that winning goal referred to an England player calling him `old man`on the pitch, which spurred him on to score!
The Southend team then was a great side, in the days when players stayed with clubs for years. Sam was a great craftsman and played a big part in centre-forward Roy Hollis` club record of (I think) 44 goals in one season. It is good to know Sam is still with us. Tony Hall 27-03-2008 |
| Sam McCrory was one of the greats that played for Southend United in the 1960s. He scored the club`s fastest goal (until Freddy Eastwood broke that record). He was picked for Northern Ireland to play against England at Wembley - and scored a goal for them in their win over the home side. He was very skilful, and a joy to watch. Martin Levin 17-03-2008 |
