| After leaving Town and retiring from the game in February 1959 Tom became landlord at the Mulberry Tree Inn on Woodbridge Road, Ipswich. Ralph 10-02-2012 |
| 'Uncle' Tom was my mothers brother and as a 16 year old would often invite me over from Colchester for Saturday games where he would put me in a stand seat.
For a tall man he was very nimble and had a very effective 'turn on the spot' to send the oposition completely in the wrong direction.
On one of his visits to my mother, my father took him over the road to Colchester United to see if they were interested in him, but they declined.
A few months later he had a trial for Ipswich where he proved very succesfull. The crowds regular chant was 'Give it to Garneys' Brian Everett 15-01-2012 |

| Although not as fast as Doug Millward's record breaking 10 second goal against Newport County at Portman Road in February 1957, Garneys did score after just 15 seconds against Brentford earlier that same season. | Tom Garneys owned "The Dainties" sweet shop in Queensway for a time in the late 1960s. The back yard of the shop backed onto my back garden where Tom would hear me playing football and commenting on my own game, making reference to Ray Crawford, the striking hero of Town at the time. I would often hear Tom say in reply to my mention of Crawford, "he`s useless" which was, of course, friendly and amusing banter as he previously played in Crawford`s position for Town, a fact I didn`t know as an 8 or 9 year-old!
