| Joe first played for South London side Lion Athletic, he was spotted by Millwall and played a trial game for their Youth team at the end of 1956/57. He then signed as an amateur for the start of 57/58 [Not January 1958 as noted previously - Ralph] before signing as a Pro in February 1958. After he retired from Ipswich because of a knee injury he then became player manager for another South London side - Old Roan FC where he played in midfield for a further 10 years, he also played cricket for them. Joe was also a black taxi driver and in his first spell at Ipswich was allowed to move back to London to combine his taxi work with playing for ITFC.
