| As a Palace fan one match in which Roy Bailey played in has always stuck in my memory. Palace were away to Leyton Orient in the early 50's Palace went 2 down after about 5 mins Bailey injured his arm and was replace by our center half Len Choules and Roy played out on the wing. No subs in those days, we were 6 - 0 down at half time. Roy returned to play in goal in the second half literally with one arm, the final score 8 - 0 to Orient. Stan Mayle 23-05-2011 |
| Roy Bailey was a key member of Sir Alf Ramsey's 1961/62 League Championship winning side. The following pen picture is extracted from the East Anglia Daily Times Championship Souvenir brochure published at the end of that momentous season: "ROY BAILEY who has saved Ipswich on countless occasions in the past six years, is the Town's reliable last line of defence and has settled down to First Division football so well that he must be rated amongst the top six goalkeepers in the country. Born at Epsom in 1932, the same year as April the Fifth won the Derby, he was the fifth child in a family of 13. "He was evacuated to Somerset during the war and went to school in Weston-super-Mare but returned to his native Surrey at the age of 15 and played for Tottenham Juniors together with his elder brother David. However, the Bailey brothers reckoned that it was too far to travel from Epsom to North London, so they joined nearby Crystal Palace as amateurs. David Bailey has since represented Surrey, Somerset and Gloucestershire as an amateur while in the meantime Roy was employed by his uncle in the painting and decorating trade. National Service took Roy to Germany where he represented B.A.O.R. He also reached the quarter finals of the Army Cup. "Although Roy made his League debut against Torquay at the age of 17 when the Palace lost 3-1, he did not make regular appearances until after his Army days. When he arrived at Ipswich on the last day before the transfer deadline in March 1956 he came into the League side in the Easter local Derby match with Norwich City at Carrow Road. He conceded two goals in the first three minutes, but despite such a disastrous start he soon displaced George McMillan as the Town's regular 'keeper and has won Championship medals in the First, Second and Third Divisions of the Football League. Roy is a qualified M.C.C. coach a and F.A. coach and is in charge of Physical Training at Everton House School in Ipswich. "In the summer Roy plays cricket for Ipswich and East Suffolk, one of the leading clubs in Suffolk, for whom he keeps wicket. He is an ardent supporter of Surrey in the County Championship. In the winter he runs the Ipswich footballers' darts team which plays weekly matches against local clubs." Ralph 01-06-2002 |

Roy Bailey, Larry Carberry, John Elsworthy, Ted Phillips and Jimmy Leadbetter became the first and remain the only players who have won First, Second and Third Division Championship medals with the same club.
