| Mills turned down various moves away from Portman Road before settling on a transfer to Southampton in November 1982. In 1981 Sunderland failed to coax him to Roker Park as player-assistant manager (a move that could have netted Town £150,000), Leicester failed in a bid to sign him at the start of the 82-83 season, and a player-manager role at Third Division Reading (were close friend Jonathan Crisp and others were bidding to make a takeover) failed to materialise. | The Early Years: Pompey disbanded their youth team in the summer of 1965 and Mills arrived at Ipswich on 1st August, the same day Colin Viljoen arrived - what a momentous day for the Club, although I`m sure they didn`t realise it at the time! Mills was 16 1/2 at the time, a tender age to be moving up to Suffolk. Too young then to be signed as a pro, and only did so (February 1966) shortly after his 17th birthday (January 1966). Mick made his youth debut on 21st August 1965, at right-half, on the opening day of the South East Counties League, against Arsenal.
He made around 40-odd appearances in the youth team during his early time at Portman Road. His record just keeps getting more and more impressive!

| In addition to the 741 games he played for the First team, Mick also played in 61 Reserve games for Ipswich, making his debut as a 16-year-old at right-back against Chelsea in a 6-1 defeat in September 1965 in which Peter Osgood scored a hat-trick.

| Mick went to Moss Lane Primary School in Godalming where I think he was known as Mocker. Always kicking a tennis ball around, a game usually started before school in the playground and then continued through out the "Playtimes" during the day. We were in Mr Orchard's class together where, sometimes his punishment for mucking around, was to be sat next to me - if I didn't help him with his sums then I would be told to watch out after school. We had great school footie side with Mick as a forward, I remember playing left back in a game where we beat the other side Busbridge by 26 - nil.
