| Mick Burns was my uncle. he was my boyhood hero although he retired when I was only 9.
He kept goal for the toon before going to Preston, was at Wembly with them in 1937 where he let 3 in from the Mackems (only thing I ever had against him! LOL.
He signed for Ipswich 'cos they were the up & coming team of the time.
My Dad reckoned when Mick retired 52/53 he had the longest playing record in the league. Not sure if thats right or not.

| I was a mere lad about 10 years old and boarded a tram in Bramford road Ipswich to go to watch Ipswich Town play.. I sat next to a man I recignised as Mick and touched his gloved hand... He was wearing yellow gloves... During the match I saw that Mick was actually wearing those same yellow gloves and I said to the man standing next to me.."I actually touched those gloves on the tram today".. a typical 10 year old's comment jim grimwood 24-10-2010 |

| I find I must drop you a line from an interest angle. I am eighty one years of age, but must confess I was never a footballer, nor a supporter even. However, I saw the name Mick Burns whilst surfing and my memory jumped right back to the 1930s. I was going to school at the time in LEEHOLME, and I can see Mickie Burns in my mind now like it was yesterday. He played at that time for NEWCASTLE, and he walked around LEEHOLME wearing plus fours (An international football player was indeed somebody) I can remember a day I asked him in the street if he had any cigarette cards, but can't remember if I got one or not.
