Our commentsNone Your commentsARTHUR WILDING (IPSWICH (among a a few select others)): COULD I SAY WHAT A PLEASURE IT IS TO HAVE FOUND (THROUGH MY SON) THIS SUPERBLY RESEARCHED SITE (ALSO EASY TO FOLLOW FOR AN OLDIE LIKE ME). GREAT TO BE ABLE TO TRACE PRESENT AND PAST PLAYERS (INCLUDING ACADEMY)UNDER ONE ROOF,AS IT WERE.
I worked in Ipswich from Sept 1959 and Portman Rd. was my favourite Saturday afternoon haunt.
Several memories stll abide all these years later and one of the most vivid is that of John Elworthy majestically striding up from the half-back position (as it was then) in that inimitable style of his.
To my mind comparison with names like Wright, Moore, Beckenbauer (spelling ? ) Hansen etc are not fanciful. One thing of special interest to me living in Wales is that I remember a saying going around at the time that John Elsworthy was one of the unluckiest players never to be capped for his country.
