| From The Guardian: Despite looking at least a decade older than his team-mates, winger McLuckie was only 30 in 1939. He had joined Ipswich from Aston Villa three years earlier, a shock move as Town were still to achieve League status, and in 1938 he was rewarded by becoming the first captain of the club's full-time professional era. Retiring in 1945, McLuckie worked as a reserve-team coach (enjoying a late emergency appearance after winger Geoff Fox was injured in the dressing room before an FA Cup match), then became manager of Clacton Town. | Jimmy McLuckie was the 1st Professional player to join Ipswich Town and the 1st player in Ipswich Town's history to be sent off. He played his last match for us in April 1946 then he played an important part of in the Development of the Professional club at Ipswich Town. | Jimmy McLuckie was my uncle on my mother`s side and I have very fond memories of him. We would go to his home in Ipswich every year for 2 weeks holiday when I was a child. I never knew he had been so successful as a footballer as neither he or the family spoke of it. My recollections of him were of a quiet, gentle and much loved uncle who was very close to his sister, my mother. Lil Maitland 20-09-2006 |
