| I had the honour of meeting and having a natter with Gerard Austin Baker, better known as Gerry at a Junior match in Uddingston, Lanarkshire between Thorniewood United and Bellshill Athletic in August 2009. Very down to earth person and approacfhable nice to see anyone that played pro football such as him with that type of attitude and his Brother Joe, was not a bad geezer too, I may add. | When Gerry was let go by Coventry he became player manger at Margate. he joined them in the Summer of 1970 and stayed till the end of September 1971 when he moved onto play for Nuneaton, he stayed with them till joining Bedworth in the 1972/73 season.After retiring from football he worked at the Jaguar Car factory in Coventry. In 1979/80 he managed the Coventry Colliery football team.His wife Ann was a sprinter and both his daughters represented England at Athletics.
His Margate record for 1970/71 was 41 appearances including 4 as sub, and he scored 11 goals. In 1971/72 he scored 5 goals in 11 appearances before resigning as player-manager.
Before joining Larkhall Thistle he played for Craigneuk Boys Club and he represented Lanarkshire Schools. He only played for Larkhall 6 times before moving south to Chelsea. A Ross 03-10-2008 |
| Born with brittle bones and twice broke his leg when a younster. His mother Elizabeth widowed when Gerry was just 9. His father was killed in action during WWII. At Chelsea he was homesick so returned to Scotland and was subsequently suspended by manager Ted Drake for 6 months. During that period he took a job as a painter. His two daughters Karen and Lorraine have both run for Great Britain, Lorraine coming 5th in Los Angeles Olympic 800m final. Worked at Jaguar palnt for 20 years and then became a landscape gardener. | Gerry and his younger brother Joe created something of a unique record by playing for countries other than those in which they were raised. Gerry was born in the USA and Joe in Liverpool, and while they were brought up in Lanarkshire, Scotland, both later played for their countries of birth. Gerry once scored 10 goals in a Scottish FA cup-tie for St Mirren, while Joe made an historic debut for England against Northern Ireland in 1959, becoming the first player to be capped by England whilst playing for a club outside the Football League (he was with Hibs at the time). | Many thanks to Andy Pearce for forwarding the following: Baker made seven appearances [for the USA] from 1968-69 scoring two goals. He made his debut on Oct. 13, 1968 in a World Cup Qualifer against Canada in Toronto (4-2 L). He appeared six times in 1968 and once in 1969. His best game was scoring two goals against Bermuda in a 6-2 win in a WCQ in Kansas City, Missouri on Nov, 2, 1968. His last game was a 1-0 loss to Haiti on May 11, 1969 in San Diego in a WCQ which eliminated the U.S. from Mexico `70. What you must remember about the U.S. National Team at that time is aside from World Cup Qualifying or Olympic qualifiers, they rarely played friendlies. The U.S. did not play a game between May 11, 1969 and August 20, 1972. They were also a motley collection of European-based players, American collegiate players and naturalized Americans who played in ethnic club teams in the U.S. The late sixties were a strange time in American soccer before the NASL had an effect on the National Team, and they were still relying on American amateur club teams to fuel the national side. | According to The Men Who Made the Town (John Eastwood and Tony Moyse, 1986), New York born Gerry Baker, who played for Ipswich between 1963 and 1967, also represented the USA during this period. Baker certainly represented the US after his transfer to Coventry City, scoring twice in a 6-2 win over Bermuda in November, 1968.
