| The first set of players you watch always live in the memory as heroes and in my case Bill was one of those.I first started going to portman road in 1967 and people like Danny Hegan,Ken Hancock etc etc were players we looked up to but Bill was head and shoulders the best player we had at the time.Although small in stature you talk to any opposition forward from that time and they will tell you there wasnt a harder opponent than Bill Baxter.So it is with great sadness I am writing this on the day his passing has been announced,he only lived about 50 miles away from me in Fife and I had thought about getting in touch to see if he wanted to chat about the old days.Sadly that wont happen now.

and was one of the best centre halfs to wear the boro shirt even at the later stages of his playing days.

| Rejected Aston Villa and Blackburn to join Ipswich. His long service was rewarded with a testimonial match against West Ham United in May, 1970. | The best centre half never to play for Scotland. This was probably due to his lack of height which he made up for by a good jumping ability. The story was that Ron Davis (Soton) was afriad to play against him and was often not in the team when Soton played Ipswich.
