| Allen used to train our works football team, BT Research, and was always only to happy to have a pint and a 'crack' with the lads afterwards. | Allan came through the Coleraine youth and reserve teams just as his elder brother Victor had done. He was handed his debut by Bertie Peacock in January 1964, helping Coleraine to a 4-1 victory over Distillery, but only made three further appearances that season.
He didn’t become properly established as a fixture in the side until the next season, 1964/65 Coleraine finished second in the league, but reached the Irish Cup final for only the third time, thanks to Hunter’s winning goal in the semi final against Glentoran, heading home from a Tommy Kinsella corner. It was one of only two goals he scored for the club – you have to say he picked his moment well.
Coleraine won the showpiece 2-1 against Glenavon which earned them a place in the next season’s Cup Winners Cup where they would play Dynamo Kiev, making them the first Irish League team to play in the Soviet Union. That season saw Hunter play in 50 matches and help Coleraine to Ulster Cup success, further underlining his reputation as one of the most promising centre halves in the league.
Hunter left Ireland in December 1966 to join Oldham Athletic.

| ive known Alan (big five) four a lot of years,dont live far from me and i see him occasinally, lovely family man as well as one of the greatest footballers ipswich has ever had. Alan and kevin beatie were the best.those days have gone when they did it for the love of the game like those too did and in fact the whole team in 78 enjoyed the football,not just the worry of the wages at the end of the month. i hear he does a lot for disabled children now. thats very tippicle of Alan all heart!! joy Elliston 12-01-2008 |
| As a youth at Ipswich I was kicked many times by Allan, I was Durham County champion at 100m and he was slow and did not like any body geting past him especially a young 15 year old

| I live two doors way from Big Al and often have talks with him. He now does a lot of voluntary coaching with local handicapped children and also plays golf as much as he can!
Allan is a truly gentle giant who always has time to speak and always enquires after the welfare of my children and family.

| Big Al was the greatest centre-half ever to grace the blue of Ipswich. I know everyone rates Kevin Beattie as the best, and he was a god, but Hunter just sneaks it for me. Imposing in the air and with great finesse with the ball at his feet, he was probably the greatest centre-half in the English league from 72-79. For your stats his first game for the Town was against Leicester at Portman Road on Sept 11 1971. Not 100% sure, but I think his final competitve game was the FA Cup 5th rd game away to Shrewsbury on Feb 13 1982. In a game at Ashton Gate v Bristol City in Oct 76 he wellied the ball at me from about 5 yards by the touchline and I just avoided losing my milk teeth a little early.
