Portman Portfolio: Lee Norfolk (from the Match Day programme v Derby County 2.4.1996) Last season [1994-95], young professional Lee Norfolk turned down the opportunity of World Cup glory to fight for his future here at Portman Road. The 20-year-old midfielder was wanted by the Under-19 squad in his native New Zealand for some important Youth World Cup Qualifying games in Fiji – but he decided to remain in Ipswich instead, in a bid to tie down a regular first-team spot. And, after George Burley arrived at the club at the end of 1994, and a new era was ushered in at Portman Road, Lee’s decision was vindicated as he broke into the senior set-up for the first time. His first appearance in front of Town fans came as a second-half substitute at home to Southampton at the end of February last year and the youngster played his part as Town recovered from a goal down to win 2-1. “I was pushed on at half-time as the manager wanted things switched around a bit,” recalls Lee. “When you come on as a sub you are expected to do something to affect the game and really I was there just to up the tempo a bit and make a nuisance of myself. “We ended up coming back to win the game, and I supplied the pass that allowed Lee Chapman to score one of our goals, so I was pretty pleased with my contribution.” George Burley was also pleased with Lee’s progress, and handed the youngster his full debut the following Tuesday evening, at home to mighty Newcastle. “All I can really remember from that match is chasing shadows,” laughs Lee, who has recently recovered from a bout of tonsillitis which has kept him sidelined. “Up until half-time I felt we were in with a chance, but after the break they really showed their class and it was very, very hard work. “But that match was my first full game and it is a day that I will never forget. I was up against the England midfield paring of the time in Robert Lee and Barry Venison and that was certainly a learning experience for me.” Another substitute appearance came against Coventry in May, but since then Lee has struggled to recapture the form that won him recognition. “To be honest I can’t blame anyone but myself,” admits the player. “I haven’t been playing consistently enough to get my chance this season, and that has been very frustrating. “The main thing as a young player is to know that you are progressing and the culmination of that progression is to be in the first-team – I’ve had one Anglo-Italian Cup game and a couple on the bench so far and I am not satisfied with myself. “I went through a difficult patch earlier in the season where I lost my form and my confidence, but that is back now and I have re-discovered the hunger to succeed. “The manager has his set squad now, and it is up to anyone else to play consistently well in the Reserves and force themselves into his plans. “You can’t argue with it – we want promotion, and the side that is going out has generally been doing the business, so it’s unlikely that the line-ups will change that much. “It’s a matter of working hard and staying patient. I’ve had the carrot of a couple of first-team games. Now I want another chance and I’m going to do all I can to get one.” (2005-02-25)

Gloria Norfolk: Yes I know Lee - he`s my son! He started playing at 4 years old in Wellington, New Zealand and has always loved the game. His Dad Paul is a full badge English Coach and an `A` licensed American coach and has coached all over the world - so it`s no surprise he loves the game. Lee still plays semi-professional and also is also coaching. He has a career with the Suffolk Constabulary in the UK. (2010-07-01)

A Ross: Lee is still playing football and is turning out for Stanway Rovers this season (2008-12-29)

A Ross: Made 267 appearnces for AFC Sudbury plus 21 as sub and scored 55 goals. He joined the Police service in 2000 and represented England and Great Britain Police. Played for the following four seasons for Sudbury before leaving the club at the end of the 2004/05 season. In early June 2005 he signed for Halstead Town, his stay however was a short on as on 30th September 2005 he signed for Needham Market. He stayed there throughout the 2005/06 season but at the start of 2006/07 he signed again for Halstead Town in the role of player/coach, they were relegated at the end of the season. At the start of the 2007/08 season he signed for Ridgeons Division One side Diss Town, but on 22nd November 2007 he was reported as having been released by the club. In December 2007 he was helping out Essex Senior League side Burnham Ramblers. At the start of the 2008/09 season he had joined Stanway Rovers.  (2008-10-29)

Andrew Sutherland (Mana United!): Lee and I were good mates during the 1980`s.We went to the same school and played for the same team.Unfortunately I haven`t seen or heard from him since then. (2006-05-10)

kenny weston (ex ipswich town fc): Great guy, we shared digs together in our youth team days at ipswich town. Not seen or heard from him for years and hope lee and his family are well. Would be great to hear from Lee again [email address supplied] (2006-03-26)

Richard Hoy (All Blacks): I used to play footy with Lee back in NZ, our street was a cul-de-sac and was perfect for games after school. He was very tricky and determined, and never seemed to stop running. Luckily I was a few years older so each time he tried to dribble around me (which he usually did easily enough) I had to resort to a quick shove (a totally legal move in street footy). No doubt it toughened him up and helped forge his professional career (no need to say thanks Lee). As with all Kiwi kids he was sports mad, and was also a handy cricket player, as the dents in the cars in our street proved.  (2006-02-01)

ian howitt (leyton orient): Hi; Great site. Lee is now a Police officer based (I belive) at Sudbury. John Peddelty is also a copper, I believe based at Ipswich.  (2004-05-28)

Jim (AFC Sudbury): Currently AFC Sudbury`s own Beckham-esque dead-ball specialist. Previously played for for Sudbury Wanderers, prior to the merger with Sudbury Town, and the formation of AFC Sudbury.  (2003-10-17)
