Our comments

Charlie Ashcroft was signed by Alf Ramsey from Liverpool in May 1955 and made his debut for the first team in the opening league fixture of the 1955/56 season. After seven first team outings he broke his arm playing in a reserve match at Coventry City. Ramsey bought Roy Bailey from Crystal Palace in as a replacement and Ashcroft was never able to regain his first team place. Rather ironically transferred to Coventry the following June. Gained 1 England B Cap whilst at Liverpool.  (2002-12-22)

Your comments

Andy Button: Died on 15/03/2010 age 83 (2010-06-03)

Ralph: Played in Liverpool's League Championship winning side of 1946-47. Famously saved a penalty from Tom Finney on the opening day of the 1952-53 campaign.  (2010-06-03)

A Ross: On top of the 87 recorded games he played for Liverpool, he made 5 appearances for Liverpool in the 45/46 season. after Coventry he played non league football at Chorley. (2008-10-03)

brian dean (ipswich town): to correct your comments george mcmillian replaced charlie ashcroft in the ipswich town goalfor the rest of season 55/56 missing just two games over easter 1956 when roy bailey who had been signed in march 1956 came in to deputise.george was a very brave keeper for the town but spent most of his time apart from 55/56 in the reserves.roy bailey was preferred at the start of season 56/57 and george was confined to a rare first team place after that to cover for the injured roy and he left the club in 1959. (2007-01-09)

Paul walmsley (Liverpool): I also played for Eccleston Juniors. There is a well known photograph of Charlie making a penalty save from Tom Finney whilst playing for Liverpool. (2003-03-21)

Yosh (Manchester United): He is from my home village Eccleston and he plays for Eccleston Juniors just like I do. (2002-12-06)
