GIOVANI DOS SANTOS celebrated his Portman Road debut with a fabulous strike
to salvage a point.
The Mexican ace, 19, on loan from Spurs, lashed in a 73rd-minute equaliser
after Wade Elliott had blazed the visitors ahead in the first half.
But Ipswich boss Jim Magilton admitted his side needed all three points to
stay in the play-off picture.
Yet again the Tractor Boys slipped up in front of their own fans and have
now managed just one win in eight attempts.
Magilton said: “It was probably a fair result. We had two wonderful chances
early on and you need to take them.
“When you don’t against a side as confident and competent as Burnley they
will hurt you — and the b*****ds duly obliged!”
Clarets gaffer Owen Coyle took the loss of two points on the chin. He said:
“It could turn out to be an important point come the end of the season but
after we took the lead I am slightly disappointed that we didn’t take all
three.
“It was a terrific goal by Wade and we probably should have added to our
lead — but it was a quality finish by Dos Santos.”
Coyle conceded that automatic promotion is out of reach but backs his players
to make the play-offs.
He added: “They are giving me absolutely everything and the desire and hunger
is still there.
“When you add the quality we have shown we can stand toe to toe with the
very best in the Championship.”
Dos Santos had an early chance but his chip sailed straight into Brian Jensen’s
arms, then Argentinian winger Luciano Civelli saw his low drive kept out by
Jensen’s legs.
Within seconds Burnley were in front as Elliott skipped past Ivan Campo and
fired an unstoppable 20-yard shot beyond Richard Wright.
But Dos Santos levelled with a low shot from just outside the area.
