Ipswich Town 0 Queens Park Rangers 0
Ipswich Town's hopes of making a surge towards the play-off places took a blow when they were held to a 0-0 home draw with QPR.
It was only Town's third scoreless game of the season - the away match at Crewe and the first game with QPR being the others.
Ipswich started extremely well, forcing five corners in the opening 12 minutes, but failed to capitalise on any.
The rest of the half was a disappointment, but at least the Town defence looked solid, with Richard Wright forced into action just once, safely catching a Mike Sheron header.
The main talking points concerned two penalty appeals, as first David Johnson and then James Scowcroft fell under challenges in the QPR box.
The first appeal, when Johnson went down as both Danny Maddix and Rufus Brevett closed in on him, would have been a rather harsh penalty to award.
The second, on 42 minutes, looked more clear cut, as Scowcroft, who had got clear of Maddix, was brought down as the defender fell on his leg.
Unfortunately for Town, the chance developed from a long punt up-field by Jason Cundy, and referee Bill Burns was well behind the play, and not ideally placed to judge what happened.
Manager George Burley said: "It was a blatant penalty. James was through 15 yards from goal when he went down. There was no other reason for him to fall."
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Town largely in control and QPR happy to try their luck with occasional breakaways.
Bobby Petta volleyed an early chance over after a corner was half-cleared to him, and he then followed an excellent mazy run with a rather weak finish.
Johnson, with seven goals in his previous ten games for Town, looked most likely to break the deadlock, forcing Tony Roberts into three good saves.
Wright had a quiet time again after the break, being forced into action just twice, to hold shots from John Spencer and Sheron.
Jamie Clapham, who was announced the previous day as a loanee from Tottenham and played at left back, settled in well after a nervous start.
