Began his footballing career at Everton making in excess of 270 appearances for the club and scoring 119 goals. Was the Toffee`s leading scoring for five seasons and hit 23 goals in their 1969-70 Championship winning side. Won the first of six England cap`s against Malta in 1971.

Transferred to Manchester City for £170,000 in 1974 with whom he won the League Cup in 1976. Left Maine Road in 1977 to join Bristol City and played briefly for Norwich before a serious knee injury forced him to retire from the game in 1982.

Took over at Oldham Athletic in July 1982, losing in the Littlewoods Cup Final to Nottingham Forest in 1990 before guiding them to the Premiership in 1991. Oldham also reached two FA Cup semi-finals during Royle`s twelve years at the club. Resigned in 1994 following the club`s relegation to Division One.

Appointed Everton boss in 1994 and led the Toffee`s to an FA Cup Final victory in 1995. Left Everton by mutual consent in March 1997 following a disagreement over transfer funding.

Joined Manchester City in February 1998 with the club deep in the First Division relegation zone but could not save them from the drop to Division Two.

Won back Manchester City`s place in Division One in 1999, after a play-off final win against Gillingham, and the Premiership in 2000 as Division One Champions. Things went badly wrong the following season and he was sacked in May 2001 following City`s relegation back to the First Division.

Joined Town in October 2002, following the sacking of George Burley earlier that month. Narrowly missed out on a play-off spot that season, but guided the team to successive play-off semi-finals in 2003-04 and 2004-05 (losing on both occasions to West Ham). Left the club by mutual consent in May 2006 following a 15th place finish in the Coca-Cola Championship in 2005-06 – Town’s worst league finish in over 40 years. (2006-05-11)

Ralph: Will be leaving Oldham Athletic next week after a nine game spell at the League One side. Talks over the possibilty of extending his stay have taken place but the two parties have decided to go their separate ways. Royle had returned to Oldham for his second stint as Manager in March but the Latics have failed to win any of his matches in charge. (2009-04-28)

Ralph: Joe is returning to Oldham Athletic as manager until the end of the current season after John Sheridan parted company with the club on Sunday. The former Town, Everton and Manchester City manager previously guided the Latics to a League Cup final, two FA Cup semi-finals and the top flight during his first spell from 1982-94.  (2009-03-19)
