Position

The position shown for each player is that in which he played most frequently, or is most commonly associated i. From the very first competitive games, up until 1946, it is widely assumed that teams always played a 2-3-5 formation, although since changes to the offside law where introduced in 1925 ii teams actually played 3-3-4 when the centre half position was converted to that of a centre back (although the term centre half continues to this day), and one inside forward was drawn into a deeper and more defensive role.
