Better Then Than Now
Tunbridge Wells Rangers fan Roger Bassett has published a history of his club entitled “Better Then Than Now”. In the book he describes the match against Town at Portman Road in the 1936-37 season as the most significant match the Rangers ever played and as far as he can establish the largest crowd the Rangers ever played in front of (14,211 were at what was also a significant game for Town’s too being their first ever as a professional club). He has also taken the opportunity to highlight the different directions the two towns have gone in footballing terms since then. The book costs £12.95 and is postage free. | | What's New | | May 2008 | | Cardiff v Portsmouth Tickets anyone? | | On August 18th last year Ipswich fans Timm and Daryl went to the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie between Cradley Town and Gedling Town and followed the winners of that and each subsequent game through to the next round. Fifteen games later – via Meir, Gedling, Stamford, Nuneaton, Chasetown, Bath, Port Vale, Hereford, Cardiff and Middlesbrough - they watched Cardiff City beat Barnsley at Wembley in the Semi’s as the Bluebirds booked their first Wembley FA Cup Final appearances for 81 years. Timm and Daryl would like to book their place under the Arch too but tickets for next Saturdays final between Cardiff and Portsmouth are proving to be a bit elusive. So, if you can help them out or know someone that can please get it touch at prideofanglia@gmail.com | | Wembley ’78 Thirtieth Anniversary Parade | | Thirty years ago on Saturday 6th May, 1978 Town lifted the FA Cup in front of 100,000 fans at Wembley Stadium. In celebration, the players and manager Sir Bobby Robson were reunited this Bank Holiday Monday to take an open-top bus parade through the centre of Ipswich following the route they took with the cup in a similar parade all those years ago. As it did in ’78 the journey ended at the Cornhill where the players were presented to a crowd some several thousand strong and Sir Bobby was granted the Freedom of Ipswich by the Mayor of the Borough Inga Lockington. Here are a few pictures ... | | April 2008 | | Wembley 1978 Scrapbook | | With a disappointing league campaign behind them, Ipswich, very much the underdogs, took on Arsenal in the 50th FA Cup final at Wembley. The Londoners looked threatening at the start of the game, but gradually Town took control, out thinking, out tackling, out running and out matching the Gunner’s across every inch of the Wembley turf. Clive Woods and David Geddis stretched the Arsenal defence every-which-way and anything other than a win for Town would have been a miscarriage of justice. That Ipswich only scored just the one-goal was the biggest surprise come the final whistle. Paul Mariner hit the post in the first half, John Wark repeated the feat twice in the second period, and Pat Jennings in the Arsenal goal pulled off a superb save to keep out a George Burley header. At last, with just thirteen minutes remaining, Ipswich made the winning breakthrough. David Geddis, hugging the right touchline, rounded Sammy Nelson and crossed low into the penalty area. Willie Young stuck out a leg but could only divert the ball into the path of Roger Osborne, who hit a low and hard shot left footed into the back of the Arsenal net. OSBORNE ONE-NIL! Here we present an online scrapbook of assorted memorabilia in salute of that famous day and the Cup run that led to it... | Wembley ’78 Thirtieth Anniversary: Bobby's Dazzler's | | For a club the size of Ipswich to record five consecutive top six finishes was pretty impressive, but that aside many Town fans and media folk alike were beginning to wonder whether Bobby Robson and his side could step things up a notch in the 77-78 season and actually win a bit of silverware. Ipswich started the campaign on an optimistic note with a 1-0 home win over Arsenal, but injuries led to a poor run of form and by the time Christmas came around the Blue’s were in danger of becoming dragged into a relegation battle and while they never dropped into the bottom two they didn’t secure their top-flight status until late April. Cup form was a different matter though. Aided by a series of ties against lower league opposition – it wouldn’t be until the semi-final against West Bromwich Albion that they played against a side from Division One – and a very late equaliser in the fifth round tie at Bristol Rovers, Town booked their first senior appearance at Wembley Stadium for May 6th, 1978. Outstanding performances from all twelve players that lined up for the Blue’s that day won the Cup in some style with a 1-0 win against the favourites Arsenal. Here are Bobby’s Dazzler’s, as they appeared in the official club photo’s for the season, with details of their individual contributions to that great Cup win… | | March 2008 | Wembley ’78 Thirtieth Anniversary: Riot At The Den | | FA CUP 6th Round Millwall 11-3-1978:En route to the 1978 FA Cup Final Town thrashed Millwall 6-1 at The Den. It was the largest away win in the FA Cup 6th Round since Manchester City had beaten Orient by the same scoreline fifty-two years earlier. Although three of Town’s goals came in the dying minutes of the game this was not a flattering scoreline, this was Bobby Robson’s men at their very best. Sadly events on the field overshadowed those on it as Millwall fans literally ran riot. Coaches carrying Blue’s fans to Cold Blow Lane were ambushed prior to the game, Town fan’s in a seated area of the ground were subjected to a hail of concrete and glass missiles, and when George Burley’s thunderbolt strike put Town ahead after just 10 minutes the fighting took to the field... | | Insane Society | | If you were listening to BBC Radio Suffolk on Thursdays Stephen Foster show, you may have heard a new song by Insane Society fronted by Town fanatic Sheldon Hannaford. The band have approached the club with the idea that it may be adopted as the new club "anthem", and it will be played on Tuesday night at the Sheffield United game - probably during Halftime. A ringtone can be downloaded from the band’s web page here or you can hear the song in its fully finished coat here. | | For a comprehensive a-z index please click here. |
