Ipswich Town v Norwich City Attendance Comparison Over the past 10 seasons (1992/93 to 2001/02) ………….. 1. Ipswich have a higher aggregate home league attendance, by 49,771, despite having played 8 less league games 2. The average attendance at Portman Road was 17,127. 834 more than the average attendance at Carrow Road 3. Honours are even for the number of seasons where one club had a higher average attendance than the other with 5 apiece. 4. Ipswich had the lowest turnout for a league game over that period when just 7,086 showed up for the match against Swindon in the 1996/97 season. Norwich's lowest turnout during that same period was 9,819 (v Birmingham City in the 1997/98 season). 5. Ipswich have the highest turnout for a league game of 28,433 for the match against Manchester United in the 2001/02 season (bettered this season for the local derby when 29,112 were in attendance). 6. Ipswich just have the edge when it comes to the ability to fill the ground. In six seasons out of the ten they had the "highest attendance to ground capacity" ratio. 7. Comparing attendance's to the population in the immediate vicinity of each ground (i.e. the populations served by the Ipswich & Norwich Borough Councils) Ipswich have the edge in "attendance to local population" ratio, with a higher ratio than Norwich in 6 out of the 10 seasons. 8. Comparing attendance's to the population in the teams respective counties Ipswich have the edge in "attendance to county population" ratio, with a higher ratio than Norwich in 9 out of the 10 seasons. Quite what all this means I don't know but it would seem that of the two clubs Ipswich are the better supported side. But then I would say that wouldn't I !
Notes: 1. Figures in the above table cover league games only (i.e. play-off and cup games are excluded). 2. Local and County populations are based on 2001 Census figures and are adjusted downwards for preceeding years using an annual growth rate of 0.4% (the annual population growth rate for England & Wales from 1991 to 2000). 3. Local population figures are for the area covered by the Ipswich & Norwich Borough Councils. 4. Norwich City attendance figures are based on data from www.soccerbase.com and well thumbed copies of the Rothmans Football Yearbook (1993 onwards). 5. The capacity of Portman Road varied during the course of the 2000/01 and 2001/02 seasons due to building work on both the new North & South stands. For the sake of argument 22,550 has been used as the capacity of Portman Road for 2000/01 even though during the later stages of the season the available capacity increased to 25,000. 25,000 has been used as the capacity for the 2001/02 season although at the start of the season the capacity was actually 22,000 (following demolition of the old North Stand) and increased slowly to 28,000 during the course of the season as the new NS was constructed. |
