Professional football has traditionally been a Saturday afternoon sport, allowing workers a little entertainment after their five-and-a-half day working week. The advent of floodlights in the 1950s meant that games could be played in the evenings too, but one day remained steadfastly football-free, and that day was Sunday. And so it remained that way at Portman Road until twenty years ago.

Let's face it we are not very good at this penalty shoot-out stuff and in fact since we faced our first one against Lokomotive Leipzig, in the Quarterfinal's of the UEFA Cup in 1973, we have managed to win just two in ten. Although the Blue's did win their most recent attempt against Shrewsbury Town in the Carling Cup (August 2009) 4-2, with assured strikes from Jon Walters, Connor Wickham, Alan Quinn and Ed Upson, and a save by Shane Supple.

Previously available as a free download (and raising in excess of £600 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation through donations), Nick Fuller's excellent book "On The Map" - an account of Sir Bobby Robson thirteen years at Portman Road - is now available in paper format. Rather ironically the hard copy version was released last Friday, the very day that Sir Bobby finally lost his fight with cancer.
"Robson's Ipswich years should be put into context within a managerial career that spanned club football success at home and in Europe alongside one of the most successful spells in the modern era in charge of England. This book therefore unashamedly concentrates on the start of it all - long before his 2002 Knighthood and his proclamation as 'the greatest' by luminaries such as Franz Beckenbauer. Without the experience of (re)buiding a small and unfashionable club to stratospeheric success, the rest wouldn't have happened," writes Nick.
Viewed through the eyes of a life long supporter "On The Map" is a must read for Town fans and is available now from Cult Figure Publishing.

John Cobbold greets Bobby Robson at Ipswich Station
Bobby Robson was a young and largely untried manager when he was offered the job at Portman Road in January 1969. Only 35 years old, he impressed then Chairman John Cobbold enough to be offered the position, although not a contract. Cobbold described the situation thus, "we have not given him a contract but no manager can be judged in less than two years. I sincerely hope that Bobby stays with us considerably longer than that."

The world of football has been paying tribute to Sir Bobby Robson, who has died yesterday aged 76. Here are the memories of a few who played with and for him in a career that spanned six decades...
