Town extended their unbeaten run to twelve matches in a rousing cup tie. They made most of the running, especially in the second half, but Phil Parkes was in superb form. David Johnson, with only one goal in four months, found the net in the 55th minute but was ruled offside. More

Les Tibbott made his debut in place of the injured John Peddelty. In a bruising, untidy match Town had the better of the exchanges but once again lacked the sharpness in front of goal to beat a side that defended well. More

Town knocked Liverpool off the top of the league, coming from behind three times to earn a draw. A strong wind blowing down the pitch made life difficult for defenders. Eric Gates had his best match to date in a new role just behind the two main strikers. More

Mick Lambert`s first senior hat trick saw off Third Division Halifax. It took him only 88 seconds to open the scoring. Ray McHale`s reply, from a penalty awarded when Kevin Beattie, expecting a free kick, caught the ball, was virtually the only goal attempt Halifax mustered. They did, however, battle well to keep the score in check after a shattering first half hour. More
