The game sprung to life as Town took control after a dreary first 25 minutes. Champions Derby - languishing in mid table - pushed Roy McFarland forward as an extra striker after the interval and threatened for a while. Town regained the initiative and only a brilliant performance by Colin Todd kept the scoreline respectable. More
Arsenal (a) 0-1
Town matched second-placed Arsenal and made several good chances. Bob McNab cleared a Bryan Hamilton shot off the line. The result meant Town had gained just one point from four matches. More
West Ham United (h) 1-1
With both teams creating a number of good chances it was amazing the match should remain goalless well into the second half. In the circumstances there were no complaints about the spoils being shared. More
Stoke City (h) 1-2
League Cup holders Stoke gained their first away win of the season, very much against the run of play. A controversial incident - not the first involving the clubs - led to Stoke`s equaliser. The linesman flagged for a foul by John Ritchie on Colin Harper, but lowered his flag when Geoff Hurst scored from Ritchie`s header. Just when it seemed a draw would rob Sir Alf Ramsey`s England squad of the services of Gordon Banks and Mick Mills for the match against Yugoslavia, Stoke stole a late winner. More
