A poor match on mudbound Highfield Road, not helped by a whistle-happy referee. Both goals resulted from dubious decisions. City were awarded a penalty when the ball, hammered from just feet away, struck Derek Jefferson`s hand, and Town`s equaliser came from a corner which should have been a goal kick. Only Best`s alertness enabled Ipswich to take a point. More

Peterborough United (a) 2-0

Ipswich were in complete control against Fourth Division Peterborough after an early scare when Peter Price went down near the edge of the penalty area under pressure from Allan Hunter. More

Leeds United (a) 2-2

Town`s inconsistency continued with a superb display against second-placed Leeds, in which they were unlucky not to take both points. Referee Jack Taylor seemed to be the only person in the stadium who believed Allan Clarke`s shot in a goalmouth melee had crossed the line for United`s equaliser. On the other hand, Leeds struck the woodwork three times. More

West Bromwich Albion (h) 2-3

Town were apparently cruising to victory after an hour against bottom club West Brom. Their lead could have been far greater had it not been for a series of good saves by Graham Smith, recently bought from Colchester for £10,000. Albion`s equaliser was slightly fortunate - Smith`s hacked clearance from out near the touchline fell ideally for Tony Brown, who combined with George McVitie to set up Bobby Gould - but then panic set in and eventually both points slipped away. More
