West Ham United (a) 2-2

Match 311: 24-2-1962: Division 1

On a cold afternoon the fans were warmed by football which was fast, intelligent and full of thrills. Both sides had opportunities to win, most notably when Lawrie Leslie made an amazing double save from Roy Stephenson and Doug Moran, and when Billy Baxter somehow hooked a John Dick shot off the line a few minutes later. Joe Kirkup, having given West Ham a 2-1 lead with a 25-yard shot which squirmed through Roy Bailey`s hands, conceded a late penalty for handball which enabled Ted Phillips to earn Town a deserved share of the points. More

Fulham (a) 2-1

Match 310: 10-2-1962: Division 1

Without ever looking more than a good workmanlike side, Ipswich gained their first away win since late November and their first victory over Fulham in nine attempts. Fulham, struggling at the foot of the table, looked desperate at times and hopeful long balls into the middle posed no problems for Andy Nelson and Roy Bailey. Town, showing admirable teamwork, passed the ball thoughtfully and fully deserved their success, which was clinched when Bailey made a finger-tip save from Alan Mullery - Fulham`s best attacker throughout - in the last minute. The second half was broadcast live on BBC radio with commentary by Raymond Glendenning. More

Everton (h) 4-2

Match 309: 3-2-1962: Division 1

Ipswich put their cup disappointment behind them with victory over fellow championship-challengers Everton in a cracking match. The Toffees, with seven internationals in their side, had the First Division`s best defensive record but conceded three goals before half time. All came from crosses by Roy Stephenson - two corners and a free kick. For all their individual brilliance, Everton never matched Town`s fire-power in front of goal, epitomised by Ray Crawford`s strike from a seemingly impossible angle for the killer fourth goal. Town leap-frogged over Everton into 2nd place. More
