Norwich City (h) 1-2

Match 308: 30-1-1962: FA Cup 3rd Round, Replay

With a record crowd inside Portman Road, and hundreds still outside, the gates were closed some 40 minutes before kick off. Ipswich largely dominated on a hard and icy pitch, earning 13 corners to City`s one - in the 66th minute - but outstanding displays by Barry Butler, Sandy Kennon and Ron Ashman kept them out. Jimmy Leadbetter netted, only to be penalised for a foul on Kennon, and Doug Moran fired a shot against the crossbar. Then, with time running out, Gerry Mannion rounded John Compton and centred for Terry Allcock to score the goal that took Norwich into the 5th round and a tie against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. The match was broadcast on VHF radio with commentary by Raymond Glendenning. More

Match 307: 27-1-1962: FA Cup 3rd Round

A local derby - and a cup tie to boot - in front of a big and noisy crowd led to a cut-and-thrust match with too little control and too many free kicks. Two untidy goals, in keeping with the standard of the match, left matters unresolved. It was the right result, since neither side did enough to deserve victory. Second Division City were no doubt happy to have dictated the pace of the game, while Town were content to have forced a home replay. The match was relayed by closed-circuit television to a packed Baths Hall in Ipswich. More

Match 306: 20-1-1962: Division 1

Town came up against a Birmingham side in a rich vein of form and had Wilf Hall and Andy Nelson to thank for keeping the score respectable. Welsh international Ken Leek took his goals tally to ten in ten matches since joining City from Leicester, and was the intended target for Bertie Auld`s long pass which Billy Baxter sliced into his own net. With fine performances from young wing-halves Terry Hennessey and Malcolm Beard, Birmingham looked set to continue their good run which had seen them stride up the table. Menwhile, back at Portman Road, thousands of fans queued for tickets for the FA Cup tie with Norwich. More

Match 305: 15-1-1962: FA Cup 3rd Round, 2nd Replay (at Highbury)

Ipswich set up a plum 4th round tie with Norwich City at Carrow Road, thrashing Luton in the second replay at Highbury. Luton skipper Bob Morton won the toss and chose to face a near-gale. He soon regretted it as Town scored three quick goals, including a wind-assisted penalty by Ted Phillips which was probably unstoppable! Morton`s decision was especially surprising given that Ipswich had reserve goalkeeper Wilf Hall replacing tonsilitis victim Roy Bailey. The Hatters pulled one back early in the second half but two good saves by Hall killed off any hopes they might have had. More

Match 304: 13-1-1962: Division 1

Not for the first time Town`s opponents thought they were facing a two-man attack and opted for tight marking on Ray Crawford and Ted Phillips. The deadly duo didn`t score - although they each struck the woodwork - but the other forwards revelled in the extra space as Town tore a struggling Albion apart to record their first double in the First Division. Only a fine display by the stylish Don Howe prevented Town from running up a bigger score. Albion manager Archie Macaulay said after the game: “They were too quick for us. I like their kind of football and we will have to see what we can do about it at West Bromwich.” More

Match 303: 10-1-1962: FA Cup 3rd Round, Replay

While Ipswich showed improvement on the first encounter they were again held to a draw after taking the lead. John Elsworthy crashed home a 20-yard drive when Roy Stephenson`s corner was partially cleared, but was roundly booed by the Luton fans after a crunching block on Alec Ashworth minutes later. Against the wind and driving rain Town were pushed more on to the defensive in the second half. They restricted Luton to mainly long-range efforts, which Roy Bailey handled confidently, until Dave Pacey hammered the ball into the net for the equaliser. Doug Moran could have settled matters in the closing minutes but was unable to control Andy Nelson`s through pass and Ron Baynham saved. Ray Crawford found the net in extra time but his effort was disallowed for offside. Aled Owen`s final appearance for Ipswich. More

Match 302: 6-1-1962: FA Cup 3rd Round

When Ted Phillips headed home Roy Stephenson`s cross after just 50 seconds Ipswich looked set for the 4th round. That was perhaps their undoing as they took the challenge from Second Division Luton too lightly. In the end they had to hang on for a replay and it could have been worse. Two minutes after part-timer Robin Chandler grabbed a deserved equaliser, Alec Ashworth had a strong penalty appeal turned down when he was floored by John Compton, and only a brilliant goal-line clearance by Larry Carberry prevented an Ashworth effort entering the net. More
