Blackpool (a) 1-1

Match 290: 28-10-1961: Division 1

Bloomfield Road played host to the league`s top three marksmen - Town`s Ray Crawford and Ted Phillips and Blackpool`s Ray Charnley - but two hard, quick-tackling defences almost played them out of the game. Ipswich had rather more of the play but Blackpool deserved their point for a brave fight after England full back Jimmy Armfield was injured mid-way through the first half. He left the field for treatment, returning with a heavily-strapped thigh as a nuisance-value centre forward. More

Match 289: 24-10-1961: League Cup 2nd Round, Replay

As in the first encounter Swansea built up an early lead as Ipswich suffered a reaction to their efforts against Spurs. A penalty, conceded by Brian Hughes for a foul on Doug Moran, and a Ted Phillips free kick which ran loose to Moran enabled Town to equalise before the break. Only Eire international Noel Dwyer stood between Town and a comfortable win in the second half, and extra time was looming when Roy Stephenson secured their place in the next round with a fine solo goal. More

Match 288: 21-10-1961: Division 1

The visit of the previous season`s champions and FA Cup winners - currently lying 3rd in the table - attracted a new record crowd to Portman Road, topping the 28,194 for the FA Cup replay against Aston Villa on Wednesday 11 January 1939. They were superbly entertained by an exciting match full of open, attacking football. Town matched their illustrious opponents throughout, with John Elsworthy`s promptings every bit as constructive as those of John White. But while Town allowed Bobby Smith and Les Allen few sights of goal, Ray Crawford and Ted Phillips were a constant threat to the Spurs defence. In addition to their goals both Crawford and Cliff Jones struck the woodwork, the latter in the closing minutes of the game. More

Sheffield United (a) 1-2

Match 287: 14-10-1961: Division 1

On their second visit to Sheffield in a fortnight Ipswich had enough chances to record a similar scoreline but for once Town`s deadly strike force was off song. Ted Phillips, unmarked, fired wide from six yards and, with three minutes left, Ray Crawford`s close-range shot in a goalmouth melee struck the inside of a post. All three goals resulted from players intercepting defensive clearances. More

West Ham United (h) 4-2

Match 286: 7-10-1961: Division 1

Roy Bailey and Larry Carberry returned for the match between Ipswich (6th in the table) and West Ham (2nd) which attracted a record crowd for a league match at Portman Road. After an opening quarter of an hour in which West Ham twice went close Town tore their shaky defence apart. A fine display by Lawrie Leslie kept Ipswich at bay until well into the second half, when three goals in ten minutes ended the match as a contest. Phil Woosnam, the subject of a high-profile approach from AC Milan, was largely ineffective after a few nice touches early on. More

Match 285: 3-10-1961: League Cup 2nd Round

The injured Larry Carberry missed his first match since 12 March 1960, Doug Millward replacing him. With less than 25 minutes played Second Division Swansea looked set for a giant-killing. John Compton`s back-pass which skidded past Wilf Hall on the greasy surface and Andy Nelson`s mis-directed header gave the Swans two own goals, and when Reg Davies` cross-cum-centre bounced in off the far post Town looked a beaten side. However an exciting second-half fight-back was capped by Ray Crawford`s late equaliser and fine saves by Hall from Davies and Graham Williams helped earn a replay. More
