Liverpool (a) 1-1

Match 256: 21-1-1961: Division 2

Despite heavy conditions, Liverpool (third in the table) and Ipswich (second) provided cracking entertainment as Town earned their first-ever point at Anfield after four defeats. Ted Phillips put Ipswich ahead with a fierce left-foot drive from Ray Crawford`s through ball and it looked as if it might be enough to win the match. Andy Nelson was outstanding in a magnificent defence, forcing Dave Hickson to wander to the wing in an effort to find some space, and it was perhaps ironic that Hickson should provide the opportunity for Kevin Lewis to score Liverpool`s equaliser. More

Match 255: 14-1-1961: Division 2

Although Ipswich maintained their promotion challenge it was not without anxious moments against lowly Bristol Rovers. After a good first half Town were shaken by Alfie Biggs` equaliser from a tight angle. They regained the lead when Howard Radford half-cleared Jimmy Leadbetter`s corner and Roy Stephenson`s header looped over a crowd of players and into the net. Biggs missed a glorious chance to complete his hat trick in the 87th minute when a shot from Norman Sykes struck a post and rebounded across goal. Biggs, thinking it had crossed the line, made no attempt to touch the ball home and Andy Nelson scrambled it away. More

Southampton (a) 1-7

Match 254: 7-1-1961: FA Cup 3rd Round

Southampton, fourth in the Second Division, inflicted Town`s biggest defeat since they lost 6-0 at Watford on 31 December 1949. It was the Saints` first victory over Ipswich in nine attempts. They ran in six goals before half time, including a hat trick by George O`Brien, as Town failed to get to grips with a speedy and skilful attack. Ipswich staged something of a fight-back after the break and could have had more than the single goal which came when Roy Stephenson`s shot took a deflection off Southampton`s John Page. But the outcome was never in doubt after a devastating four goals in eight first-half minutes. More
