Southampton (h) 3-3
Match 238: 24-9-1960: Division 2
Two of the leading sides in the Second Division fought out a draw in a six-goal thriller. Town had the better of the first half but had only Roy Stephenson`s first goal for the club to show for it, thanks to some fine goalkeeping by Ron Reynolds. Southampton came more to the fore after the break, when the pace of their England under 23 wingers Terry Paine and John Sydenham was a constant threat. After a fast, skilful and entertaining match Ipswich, with 15 points, lost the league leadership to Sheffield United, who had 17 points but had played one more game. More
Rotherham United (a) 1-1
Match 237: 17-9-1960: Division 2
On a Millmoor pitch very wet after heavy overnight rain, Ipswich snatched a valuable point from a disappointing game. But for a fine display by Roy Bailey, Rotherham might have added to Eddie O`Hara`s first half goal. Ted Phillips poached an equaliser after good approach play by Doug Millward and Jimmy Leadbetter and Town almost stole an undeserved win when Roy Ironside, until then virtually a spectator, was forced to make a brave save at Ray Crawford`s feet. Brighton & Hove Albion (h) 4-0
Match 236: 13-9-1960: Division 2
Ipswich moved above Norwich to top the table with a double at the expense of Brighton. Town, with Reg Pickett and John Elsworthy outstanding, showed scintillating form after Bill Curry missed two good chances during early Albion pressure. Roy Stephenson had a superb debut at inside right for Derek Rees, suffering with bruised toes. More
Liverpool (h) 1-0
Match 235: 10-9-1960: Division 2
Wilf Hall was ruled out with a dislocated finger and Roy Bailey returned, having recovered from his twisted knee. Liverpool swarmed back after Ted Phillips` brilliant goal but the Ipswich defence held on for two hard-earned points. In a game of many petty infringements, tempers threatened to boil over and at one stage the referee called the captains together to cool things down. Both sides hit the crossbar, through Derek Rees and Dick White respectively, while Jimmy Melia hooked the ball over the bar from close range with Bailey on the floor. Town moved up to second with 11 points from 7 games, behind Norwich City. More
Brighton & Hove Albion (a) 4-2
Match 234: 7-9-1960: Division 2
In a magnificent display of cultured football, Ipswich beat a useful Brighton side even more convincingly than the score suggests. Ray Crawford notched his third hat trick - his second against Brighton - while Ted Phillips left Dave Hollins helpless with a 25-yard drive. In a game full of incident Town`s third goal, Crawford`s 50th in his 76th appearance, was scored while Roy Jennings was off the field having treatment to a cut head, and Brighton`s penalty was for an unnecessary handball by Andy Nelson. The result left Ipswich joint leaders of the division with Norwich City and Sheffield United, all on 9 points but Town third on goal average. More
Bristol Rovers (a) 1-1
Match 233: 3-9-1960: Division 2
With both teams ready to go, the referee kicked off five minutes early. Walter Pyle presented Town with an early lead, bringing down Ray Crawford in the penalty area, although Malcolm Norman pushed Ted Phillips` spot-kick on to the underside of the bar before it bounced over the line. Wilf Hall received a hand injury in his attempts to stop Alf Biggs` low shot for Rovers` deserved equaliser. The crowd became restless long before the end of a tame, rather dour match but the point lifted Ipswich to 4th place. More
