Bristol City (h) 1-1

Match 179: 30-3-1959: Division 2

Unlucky Ipswich were worth both points in a holiday thriller at Portman Road. Dermot Curtis replaced Ray Crawford against his former club. Bert Tindill gave City an early lead against the run of play and Ted Phillips equalised with a glorious effort into the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area. Derek Rees had the ball in City`s net twelve minutes from time. The referee awarded a goal but changed his decision after spotting his linesman flagging for an offence. More

Cardiff City (h) 3-3

Match 178: 28-3-1959: Division 2

At 3-1 up, Ipswich should have gone on to a comfortable win. Ted Phillips, showing all his old sparkle, notched two great goals but by the time of Cardiff`s third goal, two minutes from time, Town`s defence was in a state of near panic. Derek Tapscott was involved in all Cardiff`s goals, scoring the first, being brought down for the penalty and providing the pass for Colin Hudson to equalise. More

Bristol City (a) 0-3

Match 177: 27-3-1959: Division 2

In a match full of incident the final score flattered City. Gloucestershire county cricketer Bob Etheridge struck an upright as well as scoring twice, the second a penalty after Ken Malcolm fouled Wally Hinshelwood. John Watkins` shot for the third goal broke the net, the ball finishing in the crowd behind the goal. The game was held up while the net was repaired. Ray Crawford missed the chance of a late consolation goal, his 86th-minute penalty, awarded for handball, enabling Tony Cook to make his sixth save of the season from seven penalties. More

Match 176: 21-3-1959: Division 2

Larry Carberry went down with flu on the morning of the match. His replacement David Deacon, making his first appearance of the season, suffered a thigh injury after fourteen minutes, leaving the field for treatment before returning as a passenger for the rest of game. Sam Lawrie opened the scoring after 90 seconds from about two yards after a good run by Reg Evans, and went on to a hat trick. Bobby Johnstone`s consolation goal was another 25-yard drive. Town had a number of chances in the second half without being able to reduce the arrears. More

Barnsley (h) 3-1

Match 175: 14-3-1959: Division 2

With both clubs on the fringe of the relegation battle, Town`s changed and reshuffled side was vastly superior, winning a dull affair with ease. Had John Elsworthy not failed a fitness test, he would have been in for Bobby Johnstone. More

Huddersfield Town (a) 0-3

Match 174: 7-3-1959: Division 2

Huddersfield included Yorkshire cricketer Ken Taylor in place of the suspended Bill McGarry. With a biting wind and drizzle in their favour in the first half Ipswich had chances to build up a lead but were let down by weak finishing. The only real threat to Ray Wood`s goal came from Brian Siddall`s shot five minutes from the end, by which time the match was already lost. Alf Ramsey said after the game that “there will have to be changes; three points out of eighteen is just not good enough.” More
