Plymouth Argyle (h) 3-3
Match 204: 28-11-1959: Division 2
Having looked more or less in control as they built up a two-goal lead, Ipswich had to hang on in the last few minutes to salvage a point. Derek Rees was reduced to walking pace by a thigh injury incurred seconds before half-time but this could not explain a dramatic second-half collapse by the defence. More
Derby County (a) 0-3
Match 203: 21-11-1959: Division 2
Derby County, struggling near the foot of the table, had Town on the defensive for long spells and Roy Bailey gave an international-class display. Ipswich, with John Elsworthy replacing the injured Reg Pickett for his first appearance since the opening game of the campaign, rarely threatened on a heavy surface, although Ray Crawford struck the crossbar in the 63rd minute. County settled the match with two goals in the final ten minutes, during which they also missed a penalty. Larry Carberry seemed harshly penalised for a tackle on Gordon Brown but Ray Swallow fired the 84th-minute spot kick against a post. More
Middlesbrough (h) 1-0
Match 202: 14-11-1959: Division 2
In one of the most exciting and skilful matches of the season, Ipswich deservedly beat the star-studded Middlesbrough side. Larry Carberry and Andy Nelson were immaculate against current England internationals Eddie Holliday and Brian Clough. In the 55th minute Ray Crawford was fouled but recovered to go on and beat Peter Taylor, only for the referee to award Town a free kick 30 yards from goal. Four minutes later Crawford won the points when he knocked a cross from Dermot Curtis into the net from close range. More
Sheffield United (a) 0-1
Match 201: 7-11-1959: Division 2
Despite a magnificent display by Roy Bailey Ipswich lost a thriller at Bramall Lane. The decisive goal was scored by schoolmaster Billy Russell, a stand-in outside right who usually played at inside left. The England amateur international half-hit a cross from Derek Pace and the ball curled beyond Bailey`s reach and into the net off an upright. It was the first time Town had failed to score in 16 matches, the longest run in the Second Division. More
