Doncaster Rovers (a) 1-1

Match 140: 26-4-1958: Division 2

Doncaster needed a win to have any chance of avoiding relegation and couldn`t be faulted on the effort they put into the game, but they were up against it once Derek Rees was left unmarked to give Town the lead. Ipswich, with nothing at stake, played cool, controlled football which contrasted with Doncaster`s frenetic play. As a young Rovers side threw more men forward in search of victory, they often left gaps at the back. That Town were unable to exploit these was mainly due to the performance of centre half Charlie Williams - later to become well known as a comedian. Rovers were good value for their draw but results elsewhere meant that even a win would not have saved them from the drop. More

Charlton Athletic (h) 1-4

Match 139: 19-4-1958: Division 2

Charlton, in second place with 100 goals to their credit, strengthened their promotion challenge with a repeat of the 4-1 scoreline at the Valley earlier in the season. The usually reliable Ipswich defence was often in disarray against their shoot-on-sight opponents, contributing to three of Charlton`s goals. Ex-Norwich winger Johnny Summers scored the best goal of the match, beating three men before crashing the ball home. Town`s final match of the season at Portman Road brought their biggest home defeat. More

Leyton Orient (a) 0-2

Match 138: 12-4-1958: Division 2

On a rock-hard pitch which made ball control difficult, Welshmen Phil Woosnam and John Elsworthy were the pick of two mediocre teams in a low-key game. Ipswich had more of the possession between Orient`s goals and Doug Millward struck the woodwork, but they couldn`t complain about the result. While neither forward line had much to offer, wing half Ken Facey clinched the points with a cracking 25-yard drive. The Orient side included Cyril Lea at left back. More

Sheffield United (a) 1-1

Match 137: 8-4-1958: Division 2

Ipswich took their Easter tally to five points from a possible six. While United again had the edge, both defences generally held sway and neither goalkeeper was greatly extended. United might have taken both points had Derek Pace`s shot found the net instead of striking a post, but within minutes Town had equalised. The Ipswich full backs produced fine displays to keep the Blades` tricky young wingers in check. More

Sheffield United (h) 1-0

Match 136: 7-4-1958: Division 2

Eight consecutive victories had lifted Sheffield United to the fringe of the promotion race, but Brian Siddall probably ended their hopes in the first minute, sweeping the ball past Alan Hodgkinson at the end of a superb six-man move. Although United had rather more of the play, especially in the second half, the Ipswich defence was generally in command. Ken Malcolm headed a Derek Hawksworth shot off the line, while Siddall missed a golden opportunity to make the points secure four minutes from time, pulling the ball wide with only Joe Shaw guarding the net. More

Huddersfield Town (h) 4-0

Match 135: 5-4-1958: Division 2

A knee injury ended Roy Bailey`s run of 87 consecutive appearances and his replacement, George McMillan, made two fine saves from Les Massie in a largely drab first half. Town took the lead from the last of three corners in quick succession and increased it with Reg Pickett`s 25-yard drive. Sandy Kennon pushed the ball against the woodwork and Tony Conwell hacked it clear but the referee ruled it had crossed the line, much to Kennon`s disgust. Minutes later Kennon bundled into Jimmy Leadbetter to concede a penalty, and by the time Town scored their fourth it was all academic. Town`s afternoon was spoilt only by a booking for John Elsworthy after an incident involving 18-year-old Dennis Law. More
