Liverpool (a) 1-3

Match 134: 29-3-1958: Division 2

The kick off was delayed to avoid a clash with the Grand National being run at Aintree. After promotion-chasing Liverpool scored only once during a scintillating opening spell, Reg Pickett and John Elsworthy gradually gained a hold in midfield and Town fully deserved their equaliser. With time running out they looked the more likely winners until little Jimmy Harrower, a recent signing from Hibernian who had been almost totally anonymous, hammered his first Football League goal. More

Match 133: 22-3-1958: Division 2

A match between two mid-table sides had an ‘end of season’ feel about it, not helped by a gusty wind. Neither side appeared unduly concerned about the final outcome, although Town fans at least had their team`s first home win since Boxing Day to cheer. More

Bristol City (a) 0-1

Match 132: 15-3-1958: Division 2

Relegation-haunted Bristol City dominated most of the match and Town, who rarely showed as an attacking force, looked set for an undeserved point when the referee waved aside penalty appeals after Doug Rees sent Bert Tindill flying fifteen minutes from time. But Tindill had revenge minutes later, diving to head home the rebound after Bailey tipped Bob Etheridge`s header on to the bar. BBC radio broadcast live commentary of the second half. More

Match 131: 8-3-1958: Division 2

Ted Phillips returned but was some way short of full fitness as a much-changed Ipswich suffered their first home defeat for five months. They took an early lead, Derek Rees bundling ball and goalkeeper Bill Robertson over the line, only for Stoke to hit back to gain a convincing double. Tim Coleman gave Dave Deacon a torrid time, scoring twice and providing the cross for former Wolves and England forward Dennis Wilshaw to bullet in a header for the vital second goal. More

Grimsby Town (a) 2-0

Match 130: 1-3-1958: Division 2

Grimsby, with seven successive home wins behind them, had scored in every game of the season at Blundell Park but rarely threatened Roy Bailey`s goal. Apart from a late rally in which Gerry Priestley shot against the bar at the end of a terrific run, Town looked comfortable once Doug Millward steered Derek Rees` through ball past Clarrie Williams to give them the lead. Victory lifted Ipswich to 5th position with 36 points from 32 games. More
