Shrewsbury Town (h) 5-1

Match 79: 26-1-1957: Division 3 (South)

Shrewsbury, behind Ipswich on goal average and with a game in hand, looked leaden-footed against the quick and clever Town attack. Tom Garneys, who had not played better all season, had a hand in four of the goals while Ted Phillips` fourth hat trick of the season took him on to 33 goals, beating Tommy Parker`s club record of 31. More

Swindon Town (h) 4-1

Match 78: 19-1-1957: Division 3 (South)

On a perfect day for football, Ipswich dominated a match against the bottom club. Had it not been for Sam Burton in Swindon`s goal they could have run up a massive victory. While Swindon marked Ted Phillips closely, wingers Billy Reed and Jimmy Leadbetter took advantage of the extra space to share the goals, each unusually finding the net with a header. Colchester went top of the league after a 3-0 win at Reading while Town were 4th, six points behind with a game in hand. More

Gillingham (a) 1-1

Match 77: 12-1-1957: Division 3 (South)

Although good football was impossible on a rough, uneven pitch, Town should have beaten a poor Gillingham side. They were gifted an early goal when Tom Nekrews headed Ken Malcolm`s lob firmly past his own goalkeeper. But with time running out, Doug Millward struck a Gillingham post, and seconds later the little Canadian Errol Crossan rolled the ball into an unguarded Ipswich net for an undeserved equaliser. More

Fulham (h) 2-3

Match 76: 5-1-1957: FA Cup 3rd Round

Town more than matched their Second Division opponents in an entertaining tussle before losing in controversial circumstances. The free-scoring Roy Dwight - later to gain an FA Cup winners` medal with Nottingham Forest - was kept quiet by Doug Rees until he wriggled free to give Fulham the lead with five minutes remaining. As the game went into added time, Town gained a corner at Churchmans end. From the kick Billy Reed put the ball in the net, only for the effort to be ruled out because the referee had blown the final whistle a split-second before Reed shot. Confusion reigned, since the crowd didn`t even know the final score, and there were some ugly scenes after it was made clear that Fulham had scraped a fortunate win. More
