Aldershot (a) 1-3

Match 60: 29-9-1956: Division 3 (South)

Part-timer Reg Gilliam, in his only Football League appearance, was Aldershot`s hero in a first half dominated by Ipswich. Town, reduced to ten fit men for the fourth match in succession when George McLuckie was injured in the 20th minute, were pressing for an equaliser when Basil Acres scored a freak own goal. His skied clearance off Mortimer Costello`s toe landed a foot in front of the line and the ball bounced into the net through a cluster of players. Acres maintained it went out of play before blowing back. More

Coventry City (a) 1-1

Match 59: 24-9-1956: Division 3 (South)

Ipswich, playing a full league game under floodlights for the first time, ended Coventry`s five-match 100% home record. Doug Millward gave Town another flying start but this time they were unable to capitalise on it. The second half was rather tame and many of the crowd began leaving early. Ted Phillips had a recurrence of his injury and only just made it to the end of the match. More

Brentford (h) 4-0

Match 58: 22-9-1956: Division 3 (South)

Brentford, travelling to Portman Road as league leaders, were two goals down within 50 seconds. Leadbetter, Millward and McLuckie set up the first for Tom Garneys, Garneys provided the through ball for Wilf Grant to notch the second. Once again Town`s rampage was slowed by injury, Grant taking a knock and contributing nothing to the second half. Ipswich brought their total to 8 goals at Portman Road in less than 72 hours, all scored in Churchmans end. More

Coventry City (h) 4-0

Match 57: 19-9-1956: Division 3 (South)

With Reg Matthews playing for the Football League in Dublin, 41-year-old Alf Wood, Coventry`s assistant trainer, deputised in goal but couldn`t be blamed for the scoreline. Ipswich, with Tom Garneys on top form, left Coventry gasping with a high-speed first half display. Ted Phillips, injured shortly before the fourth goal, was a limping passenger for the second half. More

Swindon Town (a) 1-3

Match 56: 15-9-1956: Division 3 (South)

Swindon collected their first home points of the season despite having John Richards limping on the wing from as early as the fifth minute. Ted Phillips was Town`s best forward and deserved his goal. After 9 matches Ipswich were third from bottom with 4 points and nothing to show for five away games. More

Walsall (h) 2-2

Match 55: 12-9-1956: Division 3 (South)

The promise of the Gillingham match was not maintained as Ipswich showed precious little cohesion. John Elsworthy returned but lacked sharpness. A draw was probably a fair result but another late equaliser - a rasper by skipper Dorman - cost Town a point. More

Gillingham (h) 1-1

Match 54: 8-9-1956: Division 3 (South)

Town should have won after playing their best football of the season in the first half, but they tired visibly in the final twenty minutes. Billy Reed failed a late fitness test on his muscle injury. More

Walsall (a) 0-2

Match 53: 6-9-1956: Division 3 (South)

Town had won on all four previous visits to Fellows Park but never looked like extending the sequence. Tony Richards gave Walsall the lead with a brilliant solo goal and they could have had four in the first quarter of an hour. Walsall`s number 10, Tom Brown, was the former Town player. The result left Ipswich second bottom in the league, level with Plymouth, Swindon and Southend on 2 points from 6 games. Norwich were top, undefeated with 10 points. More

Brighton & Hove Albion (a) 2-3

Match 52: 1-9-1956: Division 3 (South)

A brisk sea breeze couldn`t be blamed for countless errors by both sides. Ipswich showed plenty of spirit after Billy Reed pulled a muscle in the first ten minutes and hobbled around for the rest of match. Jim Langley scored from a penalty when Doug Rees sent Dennis Gordon sprawling, then made a spectacular save with Eric Gill beaten to provide Town with their spot kick. Dennis Foreman was a South African who also played cricket for Sussex. More
