Coventry City (a) 1-3
Match 40: 31-3-1956: Division 3 (South)
Coventry, staking everything on early all-out attack, shattered Town with a goal rush. Ipswich largely dominated the later stages but couldn`t make up the lost ground. Brighton won 1-0 at Leyton to keep the championship race open. Orient, 57 points from 37 matches, Brighton, 55 from 39 and Ipswich, 54 from 39, were ten points clear of the rest. More
Norwich City (h) 4-1
Match 39: 30-3-1956: Division 3 (South)
In a sparkling first half Ipswich went 3-0 up, John Elsworthy and the returning Billy Reed struck the woodwork and only Ken Oxford prevented a rout. Then Reed was injured and a passenger for the second half. Norwich came back into the game but Town held on and Wilf Grant`s great long-range effort clinched the match. It was reported after the game that Billy Reed required a cartilage operation and would be out for the rest of the season. More
Brentford (h) 1-1
Match 38: 24-3-1956: Division 3 (South)
For the third consecutive match Ipswich conceded a penalty, and for the second in succession it was missed. The decision, for handball against Doug Rees, looked harsh so perhaps justice was done when Eddie Towers failed to convert the 58th minute kick. Town gained a fortunate point from an unconvincing display when George Lowden, harrassed by Jimmy Leadbetter, lobbed Tom Garneys` pass over Gerry Cakebread`s head and into his own net. More
Watford (a) 2-0
Match 37: 17-3-1956: Division 3 (South)
Struggling Watford had won only once at home since November. After Les Graham fired yards wide from a 21st minute penalty awarded for Doug Rees` foul on Jim Hernon, Ipswich were the better of two slipshod sides. The top three in the league were now Orient 53 points from 34 games, Ipswich 51 from 36 and Brighton 49 from 36. More
Reading (h) 3-3
Match 36: 10-3-1956: Division 3 (South)
Ipswich took their league goals total to 84, beating the previous record of 82 set in 1953-54. In superb conditions they should have won, despite twice being behind in the first half. Reading`s final equaliser came with the Ipswich defence motionless expecting the referee to give a free kick against Roy Green for holding Billy Baker. The ball ran loose to Jimmy Wheeler who scored. Wheeler had also been involved in the second goal, having been brought down by Ken Malcolm for a penalty. Town dominated the second half but couldn`t find a way past David Jones. More
Millwall (a) 5-0
Match 35: 3-3-1956: Division 3 (South)
Millwall hero Malcolm Finlayson made two fine saves before Wilf Grant`s snap-shot gave Town the lead. Johnny Summers had a shot cleared off the line by Basil Acres but otherwise it was all Ipswich. Grant completed his third hat trick of the season, the first Town player to achieve the feat. George McLuckie, replacing the injured Billy Reed in the unaccustomed right wing spot, settled quickly but perhaps held the ball too long for Ramsey`s plan of speed and movement. The match was encapsulated by a headline in one of the daily newspapers - `Lions thrown to Ipswich`. The Millwall manager was Ron Gray, later to join Ipswich as chief scout under Bobby Robson. More
